Palo Alto Modern Ranch
With land being so expensive in the desirable community of Palo Alto, most homeowners when undertaking a new house choose to maximize the floor area under the restrictions imposed by the City, and our clients were no exception.
The architectural challenge for such projects is how to fit a larger home into a context which is typically comprised of smaller, older homes and achieve compliance with the City’s strict enforcement of their Single Family Residential Design Guidelines.
The cul-de-sac location of this triangular property makes it even more difficult to design a contextually compatible home.
With our clients requesting a two story home over full basement with contemporary flair, our solution was to provide a house with varying materials and rooflines, and multiple outdoor spaces both covered and uncovered. Strategically located light wells bring daylight and ventilation to the full basement, which contains a guest bedroom suite, rec room, media room, wine room, and full laundry center.
