Our third project in the beautiful Menlo Oaks neighborhood of unincorporated Menlo Park was on Oak Street, and featured a site with, what else, grand old oak trees in multiple locations.
We carefully designed our house for Rob and Elaine to wrap around the largest of these magnificent specimens, taking care to steer clear not only of the root area but also designing the bedroom wing of the house to tuck under a prominent curving branch.
The result is a house, that despite being 2x the size of the original house it replaced, integrates well with the natural context and uses the trees for shade, privacy, and view enhancement.
A double height foyer sets the theme for light-filled, high ceilinged spaces throughout the house. We are especially proud of the composition of both street-facing elevations, with varied but integrated and balanced forms providing visual interest on this prominent corner site.
Interior and exterior finishes were kept “clean and simple” per the Owners’ request, which further allows the woodsy setting to be the primary focus of this house.
