Santa Clara Craftsman Second Story Addition/Remodel
Our clients had three non-negotiable items in their wish-list : green design, preserving the backyard, and incorporating an octagon in the main living area on the ground floor.
After studying many different iterations of the ground floor octagon before arriving at the solution that met both aesthetic and functional concerns, we opted to carry the octagonal form into the 2nd floor as well, helping to unify the overall composition of the facade. The 2nd story octagons help bring light into the study and master bath.
The project was unanimously approved by Santa Clara’s design review committee on the first try.
Extensive use of recycled and salvaged building materials, improved insulation, daylighting and natural ventilation strategies, and solar panels all helped satisfy the clients’ criteria for green design.
By locating the new 2nd story primarily over the new ground floor extension, we were able to avoid major structural retrofitting in 2/3 of the existing ranch style home, saving the owners money and preserving the backyard at the same time.
